The Early Years
In 2004, Bob Kaliski suggested to his siblings Ray Jr. and Barbara, his wife Linda Nelson and nephew Patrick that they establish the Harbor Point Charitable Foundation as a vehicle by which to give back to their community. Beginning with their patriarch Ray Sr., the whole Kaliski family had been very generous over the years by donating directly to many charities all over the world. However, Bob envisioned creating a foundation that could address specific needs right here in Marin County and the San Francisco Bay Area. But rather than being a “Kaliski Family” foundation, the new foundation would become a true community effort, encouraging other like-minded individuals and businesses to join them in these endeavors by contributing their various skills and financial support.
During each of the first 8 years, the Foundation hosted and produced a major tennis event here in Marin County, California bringing a long list of world-class tennis players such as the Bryan Brothers, Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Lindsey Davenport, Martina Hingus, Michael Chang, Brad Gilbert, Justin Gimelstob, among many others. The tennis events, co-produced by tennis legend Rosie Casals, grew quickly. Supported by over 200 volunteers every year, dozens of faithful local sponsors and thousands of appreciative fans, the event soon became the Esurance Tennis Classic and was featured regularly on The Tennis Channel.
Throughout these years the Foundation contributed over $700,000 to numerous nonprofit organizations such as To Celebrate Life Breast Cancer Foundation, California Prostate Cancer Coalition, Youth Tennis Advantage, and Northern Light School - all organizations which help save lives and serve disadvantaged children and teens.
In more recent years, our focus shifted to producing a variety of smaller annual fundraising events, with an emphasis on the “fun” in fundraising. With this approach we have been able to give even more financial support to our worthy beneficiaries.
This year the Foundation will produce three events:
On May 14, 2016 the Divine Wine & Food Extravaganza, helps support the Marin School of the Arts.
On August 8, 2016 Golf Fore Giving, supports St. Vincent de Paul’s Free Dining Room in San Rafael, CA.
And on October 15, 2016 a fabulous music event, Bands to Battle Breast Cancer, supports To Celebrate Life Breast Cancer Foundation.
Since its inception, the Harbor point Charitable Foundation has distributed over $2,000,000 in support of programs that advance our mission, improving the lives of thousands of individuals throughout the Bay Area.
Vision For The Future
Beginning in 2016, we have entered our next phase. After the recent passing of the family patriarch, Ray Kaliski, Sr., at the age of 100, the Foundation has received generous additional funding which will allow us to expand our reach and to take the next steps toward the founders’ original vision to engage more of our community in charitable giving and to improve the lives of many more Bay Area residents for years to come.
For most of the Foundation’s history, the primary means of raising funds has been through producing entertaining charity events. We will continue to support our mission by producing great events. However as the Foundation evolves in our new phase, we will have more flexibility to broaden the scope of grant giving. And we will be creating some new ways for people and organizations in our generous communities to make use of the Foundation as a means to direct their own targeted giving.
As a result, and in keeping with the founders’ original long-term vision, we look forward to enhancing the opportunities for our beneficiaries to receive, and to creating new ways for our donors, sponsors, and volunteers to give of their time, skills and dollars. We encourage you to join us! Together we can do great things.
